Looking after old and senior people is not easy. One needs to have a lot of patience and time on hand to be able to look after them well. Everyone’s body resembles a Machine. Similar to machines, human body parts too are subject to normal wear and tear. As we approach old age the body similar to the machine gets creaking, leaking and loose.
Medical care is the most important factor for senior citizens. May be one in a thousand manages to live through his lifespan without any medical problems. Otherwise by the time one is fifty, lifestyle diseases make home. Then we have got to start managing our blood sugar, blood pressure as well as weight and cholesterol etc on daily basis.
Apart from their physical ailments they also tend to need dental care. In fact Dental care is a major factor that aged people have got to face because in most cases they would have lost many a teeth or all the teeth would be loose.
However their dental care is not limited to their loose teeth alone. Most often their teeth and gums do get affected due to major illness, surgery or other medications. It is not sufficient to brush twice daily. They have got to make sure that they clean their dentures; use mouthwash to ensure no bacteria remains in the mouth. Using dental floss they must clean their teeth and dentures as well.
Normally with aging the gums too start receding exposing more sensitive areas of tooth. People then find it difficult to consume hot or cold liquids. At time the pain can also result out of a broken tooth or a fracture which may not be noticed by the patient.
With aging people’s body immunity system begins to grow weaker. Weakened immunity means higher susceptibility to infections and diseases. Gum diseases are one of the most frequent and common occurrences attacking the old perople.
With one or the other dental infection, the problem gets worsened if the person is suffering from any other major health issues like diabetes or cancer etc. The Dentist would have to consider and consult the complete medical history of the patient before deciding on the course of treatment and medication so as to not to affect the other treatments or medication being used.
As we age, our physical body structure as well as the muscle tone and bone structure undergoes changes. Once the dentures are fitted, they last only for three or four years before they become loose or do not fit properly. It becomes necessary to check the Dentures and align them with the changed structure or most often would need a replacement.
In line with their dental condition, their diet too would need to be modified suitably. Most of them would not be able to eat hard food or consume spicy food. In most cases people get tired easily if they have to chew on food for a long time. Therefore those of you who are looking after aged persons at home will find it easier to consult the Dentist and prepare a list of Dos and Don’ts to help them maintain the dental health and oral hygiene.
